Slayer's Kerry King took a break from the studio to do a phone interview with us today, discussing among other things the upcoming disc, Mayhem Festival, Marilyn Manson, H.R. 669 and it's impact on his snake hobby, and doing shooters at 9am with the boys over at the Transportation Security Administration.

Rock and roll road warrior John “J.D.” DeServio has a "new" old band he wants you to know about so bad that he didn't even stop his car to talk to us as he raced to the bands opening gig in New Jersey.

Choosing an old stomping ground like the Cherrywood Rock Club to debut his new band Cycle Of Pain, the Black Label Society bassist is hoping that his new band will meet with the approval of Black Label fans and bring in others as well as the new band crosses over into some tasty funkametallic chords, as well as exploring the more traditional crunchy ozzyesque sound.

I have heard some clips from their new CD and can't wait to put the whole thing into my disc player. With 13 tracks and guest appearances by Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy), Ray Luzier (Korn) Brian Tichy ( Billy Idol), Sen Dog (Cypress Hill), Russ-T Cobb, Hugo Ferreira (Tantric), Marcus Ratzenboeck (Tantric), Clip Payne (P-funk), Burton (Fear Factory) & Russell Allen (Symphony X) it rocks, it hops, it damned near does everything.

Check out Cycle Of Pain on tour with Black Label Society, Sevendust, and Dope starting in April!

Even for someone whose native tongue is english their band's name is hard to pronounce, just try saying it once much less three times, fast. The Super Insurgent Group Of Intemperance Talent, or as they refer to themselves The S.I.G.I.T. is a band visiting SXSW for the very first time all the way from Bandung, Indonesia.

With reviews from NME calling them "Scorching Gonzo Zep Rock", the band sets a frantic pace with guitars wailing and blazing away. Raw, stripped, lean, rock music taken to its hard core, they could be another White Stripes or Wolfmother in waiting, and possibly one of SXSW 2008's breakout stories. After building a solid core audience in Indo and Australia and with a couple of releases under their belt, they are ready to taste some Texas BarBQ. We spoke to The S.I.G.I.T.'s frontman and guitarist Rektivianto Yoewano, who is busy packing for the trip. Click on the "continued" link below to listen to the interview.
Founded by Patrick Boutwell and Jonathan Downs in 2002, SXSW veterans The Brother Kite will be returning to the Habana Calle 6 again for this years SXSW. With a thick layered sound that hearkens back to the days of the mighty, massive, multiple overdubs and Phil Spector's wall of sound, the group released a split 7" in 2003, followed by a full length debut album in 2004. Releasing their second full length CD last year, we got a chance to talk with Jon about the two years it took to record it in their home studio, as well as talking about the music scene in Providence post-"The Station", as well as their upcoming trip to Austin for SXSW. One of the loudest bands I have ever heard, Canada's Protest The Hero has a new record, Fortress, and a new tour. While they won't be here for the music portion of SXSW, patrons of the film and interactive portions of the festival can check out their set at Emo's on the opening Saturday night. We got a chance to talk with Arif Mirabdolbaghi, who provides the deep bass thwack for the band, about the new album, their tour, and their influences. Austin Music Hall, Austin, Texas

Legendary Texas band the Toadies will be performing 5 reunion concerts across the state with stops in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Grand Prairie in December as well as 3 additional just announced dates in Louisiana and Arkansas.

After releasing their debut album, Rubberneck 1994 on Interscope, to both wide critical acclaim and commercial success, achieving Platinum status in 1995, issues with their record company delayed the release of the second disc, Hell Below / Stars Above, until 2001 and 5 months later the band broke up, leaving fans worldwide wanting more.

After 2 reunion shows in 2006, the reformed band played several Texas dates in the spring of 2007, including 2 sold out nights at Stubb's BarBQ in Austin right before the start of it's annual SXSW festival. We got a chance to speak with Vaden Todd Lewis, the distinctive voice that helps set the Toadies apart from any other band.
This is the first tour of '07 for Les, who's been playing primarily clubs and outdoor festivals -- if you exclude his now legendary impromptu performance with Slash, Perry Ferrell, and Tom Morello at this years SXSW festival, or his other appearance at SXSW with his "mock and roll" jam band, the Electric Apricot. Though we missed both his SXSW appearances due to bad timing and exhaustion, we'll be at his show in Austin next Tuesday to do a full review and picture spread. And if we get really really lucky maybe Les will even sit down for a video interview. We did get to talk to Les on the phone yesterday about the band's current tour, his favorite bass and a variety of other interesting subjects. You can listen to the podcast below or download the club kingsnake podcast at iTunes.

With a frantic lean stripped-raw sound, Hamilton Ontario's Cities In Dust will be rocking Toronto's NXNE festival tonight at The Silver Dollar. With guitar work that scuttles across your brain pan, more than reminiscent of early Gang of Four, and vocal tracks that hearken back to the growling tone of the Sex Pistols and Shriekback, Zach Frank and the band will be buzzing through cuts from their first album as well as some new material. They're signed to Paper Bag Records (Tokyo Police Club, You Say Party! We Say Die!) their first album, Night Creatures, was released last year to great reviews, and our own Canadian correspondent, Clint Gilders, saw them once already and says they have an excellent live show. We talked with Zach Frank yesterday about the band's NXNE appearance. You can listen to the podcast below or download the club kingsnake podcast at iTunes.
Bawdy, brassy, bluesy, Peterborough Ontario's Kiss and Tells will be rocking the Black Bull Hotel & Tavern during this years NXNE. Hot on the heels of their Debut CD release "Love School" we had a chance to talk with Kait Dueck, aka Kait "Do-it", the diminutive lead singer. Soft spoken in conversation, she is a firecracker at the microphone, and backed by Wyatt 'Red Squirrel' Burton, Jenny G-Spot, Genghis Kom and Charnobyl, their sound is a rich melange of textures, from the ragtime of Scott Joplin, the campy Elvisness of Vegas and the raw tones of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Their sound is unique and definitely worth a listen.

If the music you hear behind the Burden Brothers new single sounds familiar, it probably should. Former Toadies (I Come From The Water, Possum Kingdom) frontman Vaden Todd Lewis has teamed up with "Taz" Bentley (Reverend Horton Heat, Tenderloin, Izzy Stradlin Band), Corey Rozzoni (Clumsy)Casey Hess (Doosu, Jump Rope Girls) and bassist Zack Busby (Slow Roosevelt, Halls of the Machine) to form what their Wikipedia entry calls a Texas Rock Supergroup. That is probably an apt description as Vaden's characteristic vocals are unmistakable to any Toadies fan that hears them and Taz and the rest of the band have spent countless hours performing on the road.

They are on the road again, in fact finishing up a small break before heading off up the east coast. Performing tomorrow at Stubb's in Austin, guitarist Casey Hess took some time to talk to us a bit about the tour.
SXSW's genre descriptions aside, Kinksi started as a drone band in Seattle and over the years have emerged with a much more complex sound, combining heavy crashing guitars and percussion into a psychedelic rock soufflé. This is one of those sink back into your comfy chair, put the headphones on and listen to the ride experiences.
Spending time touring in the U.S., Japan, and Europe with bands like Mission of Burma, Oneida, Comets on Fire, and Acid Mothers Temple, their last release was in 2005 on the Sub Pop label, the label responsible of breaking Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene. Discovered playing on the streets by songwriter Jack Lee, Peter Case went on, along with Lee and Paul Collins to form the seminal power-pop band The Nerves. Later when the Nerves broke up Collins went on to form The Beat and Peter Case went on, along with Austinite "Fast" Eddie Munoz, to form the power pop band The Plimsouls. Case and The Plimsouls gained fame penning the song "Million Miles Away" and performing in the film "Valley Girl" before dissolving, though they still get together every once in a while.

Peter Case still performs as a solo artist, and not pigeonholed in one genre or another slides effortlessly back and forth between bittersweet power pop ballads, classic Americana, and southern blues.
I was introduced to the music of Hugh Cornwell and the Stranglers by none other than Joey Ramone himself, backstage at a Ramones gig at the Armadillo. It was one of the bands they started listening too after their early trips to the UK, and he thought I would really like them.

In the days before MTV, the internet, Amazon.com, and MySpace, a few small magazines with limited distribution and word of mouth were the only ways to get buzz, and it passed slowly as a small number of bands toured the tiny punk club circuit of the late 70s and early 80s. The crowds they reached were all rather small, but all the old school bands that survived started that way. Bands like U2, the Police, even the Red Hot Chili Peppers did their first tours on this circuit and the interest in what is now known as "alternative" music was slowly spread this way. Mainstream music was embracing songs from Barry Manilow and the Bee Gees, and god help us, the song "Muskrat Love" was still being heard on FM radio. "Freebird" and "Stairway" were in constant rotation on all the album oriented rock stations, and anything that even remotely smelled of punk was limited to the middle of the night on a few college radio stations.

The Stranglers made their run down that circuit as well, but only briefly. By the time the Stranglers hit Austin, I was already a huge fan, owning all their released vinyl up to that point, most of it as UK imports. Their only Austin appearance was at brand new punk club called Club Foot. Formerly the 404 Club, one of Austin's first gay hotspots, Club Foot's opening night had the Stranglers as headliners. But the show was poorly publicized, the club was unknown, and nobody seemed to have told the former patrons of the change in the club's business model, making me glad I had left my studded leather Ramones jacket at home.

I looked back on that night as one of my best memories of the old scene days. The audience, though few in number, was comprised mainly of Austin's music hipsters and members of local bands, along with a small number of friends I had talked into going. We had a blast as they roiled through songs like "Tank" and "Peaches." JJ Burnell's body flailed wildly as he provided the driving bassline behind Hugh Cornwell's throaty growl.

Hugh Cornwell, former lead singer of the Stranglers, will be a performer at Austin's SXSW this year and it gives me an opportunity to dust off all my old memories from those days. I got to relive some of them again with Hugh as well as discuss all his neat new solo work in our interview. Click on the player link on the "continued" page below to listen.
Sounding like they come straight off the Breakfast Club soundtrack, New York City-based Blacklist takes the moodiness of Morrisey and combines it with Edge-like fuzzy guitar work to come up with a sound more akin to its roots than to any 21st century angst driven indie emo band.

Opening the showcase for Mark Burgess' new band, Bird, and for former Stranglers' frontman Hugh Cornwell at Austin's Elysium, they promise to fill the air with buzzy guitars and deep dark plaintive vocals. We spent some time talking to Blacklist's frontman and guitarist Josh Strawn about their upcoming SXSW gig.
Last year I stumbled into a tiny packed club on Austin's 6th Street during the SXSW festival just in time to catch the last couple songs of the Zico Chain's set. With Chris Zico's frenetic platinum blond hair, the blistering guitar runs, and the waves of energy emanating from the stage, you could have imagined yourself projected back in time to see a young pre-bleach Nirvana.

This year the Zico Chain is back for SXSW armed with a whole new pack of songs in the kit bag and have promised us another smokin' hot set. Even without the golden locks, the comparison to early Nirvana is still fitting. Chris took a few minutes to chat with us about their gig at this years SXSW and touring with Alkaline Trio and Disturbed.
Back in 1980, when both Paul Collins and I had a lot more hair and Austin was just becoming the hotbed of the alternative music scene that it is today, some interesting tours came to town. One of these included a gig by Paul Weller's UK band the Jam, at the old Armadillo World Headquarters. Opening that gig was a band called the Beat that I expected to be the ska band of the same name, also from the U.K.

Instead it turned out to Paul Collins' Beat, or the L.A. Beat, a slick, buzzy powerpop foursome whose sound showed a variety of influences. Lead by Paul Collins, who along with Peter Case was one of the founding members of the Nerves, the Beat bounded from Beatlesesque harmonies, to almost a pure Ramones rip, to Stray Cats -nfluenced guitar twang, each song seemingly hookier than the next. The influences came honestly, with Paul and the Nerves touring with the Ramones in 74, and the Nerves even penning the song "Hanging on The Telephone" later made a hit by their friends in Blondie.

After a 10 year hiatus from the music scene, Paul Collins will return with the Beat to Austin's SXSW festival with an official SXSW gig as well as several other local sets. We were lucky enough to get a chance to talk to him about his SXSW gig and what is was like back in the day before there was an "alternative" or "indie" music scene. They were supporting their first album release, Drums and Wires, and I was very fortunate to see them because shortly afterward they stopped touring completely.

With classic songs such as "Making Plans For Nigel" and "Life Begins at the Hop," a slew of other singles like "Senses Working Overtime,""Sgt. Rock (Is Going to Help Me)," and "Generals and Majors," as well as the incredible and controversial "Dear God," XTC has influenced countless bands over the years with their complex arrangements, poetic lyrics and intricate sound. They remain a favorite among musicians and fans worldwide. Their music has been covered by artists ranging in diversity from Primus to Sarah McLachlan, and they have worked with musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Aimee Mann, Thomas Dolby, the band Blur, and others.

I was fortunate to have an opportunity to speak with Andy Partridge from his studio in the U.K. and to catch up a little bit on the 30+ years since our last conversation.
Saturday he showed up to chat with us and we had a great talk about Texas Music, Dogs, and other interesting stuff.
